Grandmaster Derek Abrefa showed class when he put up a classy performance to qualify for the singles category of the soon to be held world championships 2023.

In the qualifying event ongoing In Lagos, Nigeria, Abrefa in spectacular fashion stamped his authority on the table with 3-0 wins against Jimo Alvaro, Bangoura Abdoulaye and Olayibi Monday respectively.

Abrefa also progresses into the top 8 of the ongoing competition in Nigeria.
France based Olayibi Sunday was stunned by the total dominance of Abrefa as he had beaten Abrefa 3-2 in an earlier encounter in the team event.
An excited Abrefa had this to say. “I couldn’t watch Ghana miss out on the World Championship singles category.

I had to fight tooth and nail with my swollen injured finger and I am excited for the victory. I’m grateful to God for how far he has brought me, my president Mawuko Afadzinu of Stanbic bank, the director of Sports for Ghana Immigration Service, DCOI Samuel Ayer, our coaches and all my fans back home for their support”

Derek Abrefa is the only ghanaian player in the quarter finals stage of the singles event.
