World 2022 (Q): Gabon falls from the top!

Gabon can almost give up on the 2022 World Cup … Beaten down by Libya (0-1) then caught by Egypt in added time (1-1), the Panthers had cracked twice in the last moments in the first two matches and they have cracked while short on Friday against Angola (3-1) in Luanda on the occasion of the 3 th day of qualifications.

Despite a particular context with the kick-off given with an hour and a half delay due to the protest by Angola of the Covid-19 tests carried out by the Gabonese the day before the match, Patrice Neveu’s men entered the game well and were provided the first opportunities, but Bouanga, launched by Aubameyang, crossed his shot too much, then Madinda’s shot was countered at the last minute. It was then the Palancas Negras who pushed and, after finding the small net, Zini, thrown in the back of the Gabonese defense, opened the scoring by adjusting Mfa Mezui (1-0, 25 th). Close to giving in again on a contentious intervention by Kanga in the box, for which the referee did not whistle a penalty, the visitors sank back from the locker room when Ary Papel scored at the far post from a corner after a failed intervention by Poko (2 -0, 56 e ).

The Gabonese paid a high price for their defensive mistakes caused in particular by their improvised central hinge Lemina-Ndong due to multiple absences. But they had the merit of not letting go and Meye scored the goal of hope from a corner after Palun has found the net (2-1, 83 th ). But Buatu-Mananga, on another corner, definitively showered the visitors on a head insufficiently repelled by Mfa Mezui then Obiang since the ball had crossed the line (3-1, 90 e +1) …

Angola therefore leaves its last-in-class costume in Gabon. With 6 points behind the Egyptian leader, the case is very badly embarked for the Panthers at mid-term since only the first place will qualify for the play-offs …

Ranking:  Egypt 7 points, Libya 6 pts, Angola 3 pts, Gabon 1 pt
