World Cup 2022 (Q): Guinea-Morocco postponed following the coup (official)

Guinea and Morocco had to face on Monday in Conakry under the 2 th day of qualifying World 2022, but the political and security situation there decided otherwise. Indeed, an attempted coup d’etat is underway this Sunday in the Guinean capital with putschists who claim, video in support, to have arrested President Alpha Condé. Sustained gunshots are audible from the Moroccan players’ hotel and the army patrols the streets.

Under these conditions, the two teams, reclusive in their hotel, could not carry out the training on the eve of the match and FIFA and CAF logically recorded the postponement of the meeting to a later date in the early evening.

“ The current political and security situation in Guinea is very volatile and is closely monitored by FIFA and CAF. In order to ensure the safety and security of the players and to protect all officials of the match between Guinea and Morocco, scheduled for Monday, September 6 in Conakry, FIFA and CAF have decided to postpone this match. The information concerning the reprogramming will be communicated later ”, indicates the joint press release.

As Moroccan coach Vahid Halilhodzic explained, there would be a possibility to reverse the match and certainly organize it in Morocco on Tuesday. Provided that the players can be evacuated by then, which obviously represents the priority at time T.
