Ghanaian teenage sensation Godfred Opoku has booked his place in the final of the men’s 400m at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, after producing another impressive performance on the global stage.
Opoku first announced his intentions in the opening round, delivering a strong run in Heat 1 to clock 46.05 seconds, securing automatic qualification to the semi-finals.
The Ghanaian returned to Hayward Field for the semi-final and raised his performance to another level, crossing the finish line in 45.91 seconds to place third in his heat and earn one of the coveted spots in Friday’s final.
His qualification caps a remarkable rise for the young quarter-miler, who has consistently improved throughout the 2026 season.
Opoku has already established himself as one of Ghana’s most promising young 400m runners. He clocked 45.38 seconds at the Ghana Athletics Dean Hayes International Classic in June, a performance that remains his personal best according to World Athletics records.
He also claimed gold in the men’s U20 400m at the 2026 CAA Region II U18/U20 Championships in Dakar, running 46.25 seconds to underline his status as one of Africa’s leading junior quarter-milers.
Now, Opoku has taken another major step forward by reaching a World U20 Championship final, putting himself among the best young 400m runners in the world.
The final is scheduled for Friday, August 7, at Hayward Field, where Opoku will battle for a place on the podium and the chance to bring home a medal for Ghana.
