The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season got off to an exciting start over the weekend, with goals, strong performances and a few surprises across the various league centres.

The campaign officially kicked off on Saturday, September 5, with Vision FC producing a commanding performance to defeat Young Apostles 3-0 at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex in Tema Newtown.

Vision FC took the lead after just four minutes through Naziru Alhassan Nyenye before Setsofia Aqetey doubled the advantage in the 40th minute. Aqetey completed his brace in the 68th minute to seal a convincing opening-day victory for the Tema-based side.

On Sunday, Accra Hearts of Oak announced their intentions for the new campaign, thrashing Berekum Chelsea 4-0 at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.

John Antwi was the star of the afternoon, scoring twice to give the Phobians a comfortable lead before the break. Antwi opened the scoring in the fourth minute before doubling Hearts’ advantage in the 37th minute.

Debutant Kader Mahmoud added the third in the 86th minute, while Ali Mohammed completed the rout from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.

In Berekum, newly promoted Debibi United marked their Premier League debut with an impressive 2-2 draw against Asante Kotoko at Golden City Park.

Kotoko took the lead in the 15th minute through Dogo Yakubu, but Debibi United fought back after the break. Richard Owusu levelled the scores with a free-kick before completing his brace in the 73rd minute to put the debutants ahead. Herbert Gyau, however, rescued a point for the Porcupine Warriors by scoring the equaliser to ensure the game ended 2-2.

At the Nsenkyire Sports Arena, FC Samartex 1996 began their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Karela United.

Edwin Kofi Asamoah opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Isaac Afful doubled Samartex’s advantage shortly after the restart. Meschack Sowah Adjetey added a third to put the Timber Giants firmly in control, while Jonas Wisdom scored a late consolation for Karela.

Bechem United also secured a narrow victory, edging Bibiani GoldStars 1-0 at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park. Darlvin Yeboah’s first-half stoppage-time strike proved decisive as the Hunters held on for all three points.

At the AAK II Sports Arena, Basake Holy Stars left it late to defeat Swedru All Blacks 1-0. After a goalless first half, Francis Oteng Gyetuah struck in the 82nd minute to hand Holy Stars maximum points.

Meanwhile, fellow debutants Port City FC and FC AshantiGold shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Nana Boamah Darko II Park in Kukurantumi.
