International Sports

Ghana’s medal hopes at the 2026 Commonwealth Games have finally been realised after para athlete Zinabu Issah clinched the nation’s first medal of the competition, securing silver in the Women’s Shot Put F57 event.

The highly-rated para thrower produced a season-best throw of 8.65 metres in the final, a performance that earned her a well-deserved second-place finish and placed Ghana on the medals table.

Heading into the Games, Issah was widely regarded as one of Ghana’s strongest medal prospects alongside the country’s para athletics team, and she lived up to those expectations with a composed and determined display against a strong field.

Her achievement marks a significant milestone for Team Ghana, providing the country’s first podium finish at the Games and injecting fresh belief into the rest of the Ghanaian contingent as competition continues.

Issah’s silver medal is also another testament to the growing strength of para sports in Ghana, highlighting the resilience, dedication and talent of the nation’s para athletes on the international stage.

With Ghana now off the mark, hopes remain high that more medals will follow in the remaining events of the Commonwealth Games.
