Ghana’s U20 athletics team will proudly represent the nation at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA, after the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, facilitated the team’s air tickets.
According to a press release issued by Ghana Athletics, the championships will take place from August 5 to 9, 2026, with Ghana sending a two-member squad led by coach Yaw Boakye Yiadom.
The team features two of Ghana’s brightest young quarter-milers:
Aishatu Jaffar – Women’s 400m
Godfred Opoku – Men’s 400m

The delegation departed Accra on Sunday, August 2, and is expected to return on Monday, August 10, after the conclusion of the championships.
Ghana Athletics described the athletes’ participation as another important step in the association’s commitment to developing young talents by exposing them to high-level international competition. The championships are expected to provide the duo with valuable experience as they compete against some of the world’s most promising young athletes.
The Association also expressed its appreciation to Hon. Kofi Adams for his support in making the trip possible, noting that his intervention in securing the air tickets ensured Ghana’s participation at the global event. As the team begins its campaign in Oregon, Ghana Athletics has called on Ghanaians to rally behind Aishatu Jaffar and Godfred Opoku as they seek to make the country proud on the world stage.

The World Athletics U20 Championships remain one of the biggest platforms for emerging track and field athletes, with many past participants going on to become Olympic and World Championship medalists. Ghana will be hoping its young representatives seize the opportunity to announce themselves on the international stage.
