Ghana’s Godfred Opoku has narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the men’s 400m at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, finishing fourth in the final with an impressive 45.46 seconds.
Opoku produced a consistent run throughout the championship, improving his time at every stage on his way to the final.
The Ghanaian began his campaign by winning his opening-round heat, advancing to the semi-finals with a strong performance. He continued his impressive form in the semi-finals, clocking 45.91 seconds to secure his place in the final.
In the championship decider, Opoku stepped up once again and produced his fastest time of the competition, crossing the finish line in 45.46 seconds to finish fourth.
He came agonisingly close to the medals, with South Africa’s L. Koekemoer taking bronze in 44.96 seconds. American duo J. Deleon and Quincy Wilson claimed gold and silver respectively, with Deleon setting a championship record of 44.47 seconds and Wilson clocking 44.62 seconds.
Despite missing the podium, Opoku’s performance marks a remarkable championship campaign, having progressed from the opening round to the final and improved his time with each successive stage.
From winning his heat to running 45.91s in the semi-final and 45.46s in the final, Godfred Opoku has announced himself as a quarter-miler to watch on the international stage.
