Ghana is looking ahead to its future sporting endeavors, with a focus on strengthening cooperation with the United States as the country prepares for the upcoming LA28 Olympic Games. The discussion took place during a meeting between Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, and the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, Mr. Rolf Olson, along with other embassy officials.
The meeting followed Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, providing an opportunity to reflect on the experience, particularly the visa and logistical processes involved. Hon. Adams expressed gratitude to the U.S. Embassy for its support, highlighting the deployment of additional personnel to facilitate visa processing and ensure smooth logistics for Ghanaian officials and athletes during the tournament.
Beyond the World Cup, the discussions centered on expanding Ghana-U.S. cooperation in sports development. The Minister briefed the delegation on President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to revitalize school and grassroots sports, emphasizing talent development, physical well-being, and the vital life skills young Ghanaians gain through sports participation.
As attention shifts to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, both sides emphasized the importance of early preparations. Topics included technical development for athletes and officials, qualification strategies, and early engagement on travel and logistical arrangements to ensure Ghana’s smooth participation.
Hon. Adams underscored Ghana’s abundant sporting talent while acknowledging that strengthening technical systems and forging deeper international partnerships are essential for developing athletes capable of competing at the highest levels consistently.
Both the Ghanaian government and the U.S. Embassy expressed their commitment to building on the cooperation established during the World Cup, with an openness to explore further opportunities for collaboration in sports development.
