WAFCON 2026 Matchday 1: Morocco Make Early Title Statement as Algeria Join Winning Start

International Sports

Hosts Morocco stole the spotlight on Matchday 1 of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), producing a ruthless 4-0 victory over Kenya to headline an entertaining opening day that delivered six goals and two convincing wins.

Backed by a passionate home crowd at the Prince Moulay Hassan Stadium, the Atlas Lionesses wasted little time stamping their authority on the tournament, racing into a three-goal lead before half-time before adding a fourth just two minutes after the restart.

Sanae Ouzraoui opened the scoring in the 19th minute after combining brilliantly with Yasmine Mrabet to hand Morocco the perfect start. Mariam Atiq doubled the advantage nine minutes later before experienced striker Ibtissam Jraidi made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute as Kenya struggled to contain the hosts’ relentless attacking play.

Jraidi completed her brace just two minutes into the second half, once again finishing off an excellent move created by Hanane Ait El Haj to seal an emphatic 4-0 victory.

Morocco completely dominated proceedings, enjoying approximately 67 per cent possession while creating the majority of the scoring opportunities. Their aggressive high press left the Harambee Starlets with little time on the ball as the hosts dictated the tempo from start to finish.

Jraidi became the first player to score a brace at this year’s tournament, while Hanane Ait El Haj was deservedly named Player of the Match after providing two assists and orchestrating Morocco’s attacking display.

Earlier in the day, Algeria also made a dream start to their Group A campaign with a 2-0 victory over Senegal. Marine Dafeur broke the deadlock from the penalty spot before Melissa Bethi sealed the win late in the contest. Marine Dafeur was named the Player of the Match following her commanding display in midfield and decisive opening goal.

The results leave Morocco top of Group A on goal difference ahead of Algeria, while Kenya and Senegal face an uphill task heading into their second group matches.

With six goals produced across the opening day and the hosts already laying down a strong marker, WAFCON 2026 has burst into life in impressive fashion.
