Ghanaian boxer Amadu Mohammed delivered Team Ghana’s second medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after claiming bronze in the men’s 55kg bantamweight event on Friday, July 31, in Glasgow.
Mohammed’s impressive run came to an end in the semi-finals, where he suffered a 4-1 split decision defeat to Australia’s Jye Dixon, narrowly missing out on a place in the gold medal bout.
The Ghanaian had entered the contest full of confidence after a series of commanding performances earlier in the tournament, raising hopes of becoming Ghana’s first boxing finalist at the Games. Although he fell short, his semi-final appearance automatically earned him a bronze medal, as losing semi-finalists in Commonwealth Games boxing are both awarded bronze.
His podium finish is a significant achievement for Team Ghana, making him the only boxer among the country’s 10-member boxing team to win a medal at the Games.
Mohammed’s bronze also adds to Ghana’s overall medal tally, joining Zinabu Issah, who won silver in the women’s F57 shot put para-athletics event earlier in the competition.
The medal further cements Amadu Mohammed’s growing reputation as one of Ghana’s brightest boxing prospects, having once again showcased his resilience and quality on the international stage despite missing out on the final.
With boxing concluded for Team Ghana, Mohammed leaves Glasgow with the nation’s only boxing medal and another memorable achievement for Ghanaian sport.
