Ghana’s Black Queens kicked off their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in style, defeating tournament debutants Cape Verde 2-0 in their Group D opener to secure all three points.
After suffering defeat in their opening match against South Africa at the 2024 edition, the Black Queens were determined to make a strong start this time around—and they did just that.
Captain Portia Boakye played a decisive role in the opening goal inside the first seven minutes. The experienced defender delivered a perfectly weighted long ball into the Cape Verde penalty area, where Doris Boaduwaa controlled brilliantly before calmly slotting the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to give Ghana an early lead.
The Black Queens maintained their advantage for the remainder of the first half, going into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead after controlling possession and limiting Cape Verde’s attacking opportunities.
Ghana returned from the interval with renewed intensity, pressing higher in search of a second goal to put the contest beyond doubt. Their persistence paid off when Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah whipped in a dangerous cross intended for Doris Boaduwaa. Under pressure, a Cape Verde defender attempted to clear the ball but inadvertently turned it into her own net, doubling Ghana’s advantage.
The Black Queens managed the remainder of the game professionally, keeping a clean sheet to seal a comfortable 2-0 victory and begin their Group D campaign on a positive note.
Midfielder Josephine Bonsu was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) after an impressive all-round display, dictating play in midfield and helping Ghana control the tempo throughout the encounter.
The victory gives Ghana an ideal start to the tournament as the Black Queens continue their quest for a record-extending return to the WAFCON podium.
