Nigeria’s women’s wheelchair basketball team staged a spirited comeback to secure a place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Commonwealth Games after edging India 7-6 in a thrilling final Group B encounter.
Needing victory to keep their medal hopes alive, the Nigerian side produced a determined display to claim a narrow but crucial win, sealing qualification for the knockout stage despite suffering defeats in their opening two group matches.
The hard-fought victory underlined the team’s resilience and fighting spirit, as they bounced back from early setbacks to earn a place among the tournament’s last eight. Nigeria will now face Australia in the quarterfinals, with a place in the semifinals at stake against one of the competition’s strongest teams.
Following the qualification, President of the Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation (NWBF), Oluwaseyi Johnson, praised the team’s resolve and belief throughout the group stage.
“I am incredibly proud of the resilience and character displayed by our women’s team. Despite a difficult start to the competition, they remained focused, believed in themselves, and earned a well-deserved place in the quarterfinals.
“Qualifying for the knockout stage is a testament to their hard work, discipline, and commitment. We know the challenge against Australia will be tough, but we are confident the team will give their best and continue to make Nigeria proud.”
Johnson also revealed that the players have received the necessary motivation and assured them of the federation’s continuous support. He urged the team to remain focused ahead of the quarterfinal showdown, expressing confidence in their ability to compete with the tournament’s top sides.
Nigeria will be aiming to upset Australia and continue their impressive resurgence at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
