Ghana’s men’s national volleyball team, the Black Spikers, have departed Accra for Tunisia as they prepare to compete in the 2026 Africa Nations Volleyball Championship, with qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the next Nations Cup among the major prizes at stake.
The team left the Accra International Airport on Sunday, September 13, as they begin their campaign at the championship, which runs from September 13 to 26.
The Black Spikers will carry Ghana’s hopes into the men’s competition following the impressive effort of the women’s national team, who finished seventh out of 15 participating countries in their championship.
With the women setting the benchmark, attention now turns to the men, who will be hoping to match or better that achievement on the continental stage.
The stakes are particularly high, with the top seven teams earning automatic qualification to the next Africa Nations Volleyball Championship, while the top three teams will secure qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The Black Spikers completed their final preparations on Friday with their last training session at the Borteyman Sports Complex, where the technical team finalised the squad that will represent Ghana in Tunisia.
Ghana, however, will have to wait a little longer to discover their opponents. The official tournament draw is scheduled for Monday, September 14, with the Black Spikers set to learn their group and the teams standing between them and a place in the knockout stages.
A total of 14 countries will compete for continental honours. The field includes defending champions Egypt, hosts Tunisia, as well as Kenya, Chad, Nigeria, Rwanda, Cameroon, Algeria, The Gambia, Zimbabwe, Morocco, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ghana.
With the quality of opposition expected to be high, Ghana will need consistency, discipline and a strong team performance if they are to break into the top three and keep their Olympic dream alive.
