MTN Ghana has marked its 30th anniversary in Ghana with an Invitational Golf Tournament held at the Achimota Golf Club on Saturday, September 12, bringing together more than 120 golfers for a day of competition, networking and celebration.
The tournament attracted CEOs and other corporate executives who are golfers, members of the Achimota Golf Club, MTN Ghana executives and other invited guests. Participants competed in various categories for trophies and prizes from MTN Ghana as part of activities marking the telecommunications company’s three decades of operations in the country.
Speaking at the event, Board Chairman of MTN Ghana, Ishmael Yamson, said the tournament was one of the anniversary events he had looked forward to most, drawing parallels between golf and the company’s 30-year journey. “Golf is not a game of instant results. It is a game of patience, of discipline, of playing the course in front of you rather than the one you wish you had. You do not win a round of golf on the first hole. You win it, if you win it at all, through eighteen holes of consistent, deliberate, honest effort,” he said.
Yamson said MTN Ghana had faced several challenges over the years but had remained resilient, while highlighting the company’s contribution to Ghana’s digital transformation. “We have had, without question, an extraordinary front nine, one that has connected a nation, empowered small businesses, extended financial inclusion to the unbanked, and helped write Ghana’s own digital transformation story. But we are not walking off this course today. The back nine awaits, with new holes still to play: nationwide fibre expansion, the promise of 5G, artificial intelligence, and a deeper, more sustainable partnership with every community we serve,” he added.
President of the Ghana Golf Association and representative of Achimota Golf Club, Kwesi Ampofo Yeboah, congratulated MTN Ghana on reaching the 30-year milestone and said the anniversary was about more than simply counting years. “Thirty years. In golf, we count our progress in holes. In business, we count it in years. But in both cases, the number alone does not tell the whole story. What really matters is what happened along the way. Because neither golf nor business is won with one great shot. Success comes from something deeper. It comes from consistency, judgment, learning from mistakes, recovering when things do not go according to plan and, perhaps most importantly, staying the course,” he said.
Ampofo Yeboah also encouraged MTN Ghana to build on the value accumulated over its first three decades. “While today is rightly a celebration of thirty years behind us, I hope it is also an invitation to think about the thirty years ahead. The technologies will certainly change. The businesses will change. Ghana will change. But one thing will remain important: relationships. Technology can connect devices. Networks can connect places. But ultimately, it is trust and relationships that connect people,” he said.
In the Men’s Group A, Frederick Semenu Duvor emerged winner with 39 points, followed by Isaac Asante and Kwame Boatfo, who both recorded 37 points. Michael Agyer finished fourth with 35 points, while Michael Gosney placed fifth with 34 points.
Julienne Afi Amezado won the Ladies Group A with 39 points. Princess Nkansah-Boadu and Mary Agyeman Prempeh followed with 35 points each.
Yaw Mireku Jnr. dominated the Men’s Group B, winning with an impressive 45 points. Frederick Andre Feraille placed second with 41 points, while Nathan Lee-Williams Annobi and David Boakye tied on 39 points. Michael Darko completed the top five with 38 points.
In the Ladies Group B, Kous Louanges Mang took first place with 38 points, ahead of Anita Ohene Mantey, also on 38 points, while Romina Ahviz finished third with 37 points.
Kofi Mangesi and Derrick Morgan tied on 40 points in the Men’s Group C, with Mangesi taking first place. Kwadwo Appietu-Ankrah was third with 32 points, followed by Justice Cudjoe on 28 and Richmond Aboagye on 25 points.
Elorm R. Akuash Bonney won the Ladies Group C with 42 points, ahead of Berlinda Boateng on 38 points and Afi Yayra Dunyo on 35 points.
In the Seniors Men’s Division, Jan Vogel emerged winner with 39 gross, while Adewale Adeoye-Famosa finished second with 38 gross. Helen Appah won the Seniors Ladies Division with 44 gross, followed by Hajia Zenabu Sulemana with 40 gross.
The Boobie Prize went to Simran Oberoi in the men’s category with 22 gross, while Christine Fuller won the ladies’ category with 26 gross.
The auxiliary prizes also went to Rickie Hurtubise and Berlinda Dzifa Boateng for the Longest Drive on Hole 17 in the men’s and ladies’ categories respectively. Dennis Addo and Mary Agyeman Prempeh won the Closest to the Pin prizes on Hole 18.
The tournament formed part of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations, bringing together members of the corporate community and the golfing fraternity to celebrate the company’s journey and look ahead to its next chapter.This version keeps the speeches directly quoted, but trims them enough that they don’t overwhelm the actual tournament report.
