MTN FA Cup champions Nations FC have been handed a tricky tie against Mali’s FC Diarra in the first preliminary round of the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup following Thursday’s draw conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The Ghanaian side will travel to Bamako for the first leg, scheduled for September 4–5, before hosting the return fixture between September 11 and 13, 2026. The winner over the two legs will progress to the second preliminary round, where they will face either AS Zam or ASKO de Kara.
Nations FC booked their place in Africa’s second-tier inter-club competition after defeating Dreams FC 5-4 on penalties to lift the 2025/26 MTN FA Cup, securing the club’s first major trophy and a historic continental ticket.
Ironically, the club heads into the CAF campaign after suffering relegation from the Ghana Premier League. The Abrankese based outfit endured a difficult domestic season, finishing 16th with 44 points from 34 matches. The Confederation Cup therefore presents an opportunity for the club to restore pride and make a statement on the continental stage despite their league disappointment.
In preparation for the African challenge, Nations FC have strengthened their technical bench with the appointment of experienced Croatian coach Zdravko Logarušić, who is expected to bring his vast international experience to the team.
The club will also rely on the brilliance of Brandon Antwi Sarpong, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the MTN FA Cup after playing a pivotal role in their triumph. However, Nations FC will have to cope without former captain Razak Sampson, whose departure leaves a significant gap in the squad.
Their opponents, FC Diarra, are one of Mali’s emerging clubs and will be eager to make home advantage count in the opening leg before travelling to Ghana for the decisive return fixture.
With continental football offering a fresh start, Nations FC will be determined to put their domestic struggles behind them and embark on a memorable CAF Confederation Cup journey.
