Heartbreak for Team Ghana as Injured Desmond Pappoe Pulls Out of Commonwealth Games

International Sports

Ghana’s medal hopes in boxing have suffered a major setback after boxer Desmond Pappoe was forced to withdraw from the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games due to a shoulder injury.

The Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) Ghana announced on Wednesday, July 29, that the talented boxer has been ruled medically unfit to continue in the competition following a comprehensive assessment by Team Ghana’s medical personnel.

According to the statement, the decision to withdraw Pappoe was reached after consultations involving the medical team, coaches and Games officials, with the athlete’s health and long-term well-being taking priority over competition.

Pappoe had been preparing to compete in the quarterfinal stage and was regarded as being in excellent condition before sustaining the injury. His withdrawal comes as a significant disappointment for both the athlete and Team Ghana, who had hoped he would challenge strongly for a medal.

Despite the unfortunate development, CGA Ghana praised Pappoe’s dedication throughout the qualification process and his preparations for the Games. The Association expressed confidence that the boxer will make a full recovery and return stronger to continue his promising career while representing Ghana at future international competitions.

The Association also commended Team Ghana’s medical staff for their professionalism and swift response in managing the injury, stressing that the athlete’s welfare remains the foremost priority.

Although Pappoe’s withdrawal is a blow to Ghana’s boxing campaign, Team Ghana remains focused on delivering strong performances across the remaining disciplines at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

CGA Ghana concluded by wishing Desmond Pappoe a speedy and complete recovery, expressing hope of seeing him back in the ring soon.
