The 2026 Commonwealth Games officially got underway on Thursday, 23 July, with a colourful opening ceremony at the OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, where King Charles III declared the Games open.
Team Ghana made a vibrant entrance during the Parade of Nations, proudly dressed in beautifully designed traditional Kente attire, symbolising the country’s rich cultural heritage. Leading Ghana’s delegation was baton bearer and para powerlifter Haruna Tahiru, who was accompanied by his teammates as they marched into the arena to the cheers of spectators.
A total of 74 Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) are competing at this year’s Games, including 22 African nations, with approximately 3,000 athletes vying for honours across 10 sports during the 11-day competition.
Ghana heads into the Games with an impressive Commonwealth Games history, having won 41 medals—comprising 4 gold, 17 silver and 20 bronze medals. Team Ghana will be aiming to add to that tally with strong performances across the various disciplines in Glasgow.
