Ghana’s medal hopes in the women’s bantamweight boxing event at the ongoing Commonwealth Games suffered a setback after Nancy Bamfo bowed out in the Round of 16 following a unanimous points defeat to Nicole Clyde of Northern Ireland.

The Ghana Armed Forces corporal, who entered the competition as one of Ghana’s strongest medal contenders, was unable to overcome her opponent in the Women’s Bantamweight (54kg) contest. After a closely contested opening exchanges, Clyde took control and secured a convincing 5-0 unanimous decision at the end of the third round to book her place in the quarter-finals.

Bamfo, a student of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), had carried the hopes of progressing towards the podium but saw her campaign come to an early end despite a determined performance.

Her elimination is another disappointment for Team Ghana’s boxing contingent as they continue their quest for medals at the Games, with the remaining boxers now carrying the nation’s hopes of securing podium finishes.
