Ghana’s quest for a medal in boxing at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow suffered an early setback after experienced boxer Abdul Wahid Omar was eliminated in the men’s 65kg Round of 32 on Friday.
Omar lost 3-0 on points to England’s Patris Mughalzai, bringing an abrupt end to his campaign and dashing his hopes of winning a third Commonwealth Games medal.
The defeat is particularly disappointing for the veteran boxer, who had entered the competition with high expectations after winning bronze medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Returning to the city where he first stepped onto the Commonwealth podium, Omar had hoped to add another chapter to his impressive Games legacy.
His exit also comes just days after the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry for Sports and Recreation, fulfilled a long-standing promise by settling the outstanding US$3,000 reward owed to him for his bronze medal-winning performance at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Despite the renewed motivation and support, Omar was unable to overcome Mughalzai, who produced a composed performance to secure a unanimous decision and progress to the next round.
Omar’s bout marked the end of Team Ghana’s Day Two schedule at the Games.
