International Sports

Ghana’s African Amateur Bantamweight champion, Amadu Mohammed, is just one victory away from a place in the men’s 55kg final after producing a spirited performance to defeat England’s Ellis Trowbridge in the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, July 28.

The Ghanaian southpaw earned a 4-1 split decision victory after three fiercely contested rounds, booking his place in the semi-finals and moving within touching distance of a gold medal bout.

Amadu edged the opening round on the scorecards of four of the five judges before Trowbridge responded in the second round to level the contest. With the fight hanging in the balance, the Ghanaian boxer delivered a composed and aggressive final round, landing the cleaner shots and controlling the exchanges to convince four judges to score the bout in his favour.

The judges returned scores of 29-28, 29-28, 27-30, 29-28 and 29-28, handing Amadu a deserved victory on points and sealing his progression to the last four.

The result keeps Ghana’s boxing medal hopes alive, with Amadu now guaranteed at least a chance to fight for either gold or silver, depending on the competition format, when he steps into the ring for the semi-finals on Friday, July 31.
