Exchequers produced a commanding performance to defeat rivals Army 6–2 in their Week 5 clash of the 2026 Salpholda Hockey League on Saturday, June 20, at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch.

Although it was officially Week 5, the blockbuster clash marked the fourth match of the season for both sides, who came into the game level on points after winning all three of their previous fixtures. With bragging rights and top spot at stake, the atmosphere at the packed venue was electric, as fans from both camps turned up in full voice.

Exchequers wasted no time in asserting dominance, taking the lead inside the opening minute through Ebenezer Nortey. The early strike, which became the second-fastest goal of the season, immediately set the tone for a thrilling contest.

The Bankers continued to dictate play, with Elikem Akaba, one half of the famous Akaba brothers, adding his brace of the season, both goals coming from well-worked field play. Captain Bempah then led by example, finding the back of the net alongside goals from Ryan Takyi, Shadrick Quarcoo and Amartey Joshua to complete a commanding performance.

Army showed resilience and kept pressing, earning a penalty stroke in their bid to get back into the game. However, Exchequers goalkeeper Benjamin Acquah stood firm, producing a crucial save to deny them. Army eventually found some reward for their persistence, with Abdul Malik scoring twice to provide consolation goals.

Speaking after the match, Exchequers captain Bempah expressed satisfaction with the result and the team’s mindset. “We expected a win and the maximum points and we got them. Despite the performance of our opponents, we are happy we gave our best and it paid off for us. With this win, we are certainly defending the title,” he said.
He also added, “We are grateful for the support from our fans, as well as management and the technical team.”

The convincing win keeps Exchequers firmly at the top of the table with a perfect 12 points, sending a strong message to the rest of the league as they continue their title defence.
