Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has announced an enhanced cash reward package for Team Ghana athletes, pledging an US$10,000 bonus for every gold medal won at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
The Minister made the announcement during a visit to Team Ghana’s training camp in Scotland, where he interacted with athletes, coaches and officials as the nation intensifies preparations for the Games.
During the visit, Adams expressed confidence in the team’s determination and fighting spirit, saying the athletes had demonstrated a strong desire to bring home gold medals for Ghana. “They are showing me that they want to win gold. We have therefore decided as an industry to increase the reward for every gold medal winner to US$10,000. On my own, I will personally add US$2,000 to every athlete who wins gold, meaning each gold medallist will receive US$12,000.”
The Minister explained that while the gold medal incentive has been increased, the existing reward policy for silver and bronze medal winners remains unchanged. “We are maintaining the rewards for silver and bronze as outlined in the ministry’s policy. These awards are denominated in US dollars, so those amounts remain the same.”
Adams encouraged the athletes to remain focused and compete with determination, assuring them of the government’s commitment to supporting sports development and rewarding excellence on the international stage.
Ghana will compete in 10 sporting disciplines at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The disciplines are athletics, boxing, badminton, cycling, para athletics, para powerlifting, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, and swimming.
The Minister’s visit is expected to further motivate Team Ghana as the delegation aims to improve on previous Commonwealth Games performances and challenge for medals in Scotland.
