The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has celebrated its 58th anniversary, paying tribute to the pioneers who laid the foundation of sports journalism in the country while reaffirming its commitment to nurturing the next generation of sports media professionals.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 3, 2026, the Association reflected on nearly six decades of dedicated service to Ghana’s sporting ecosystem, highlighting its role as the country’s foremost umbrella body for sports journalists since its establishment in 1968.
SWAG noted that over the past 58 years, it has evolved from a small group of visionary sports reporters into a respected institution that has not only chronicled Ghana’s sporting history but has also contributed significantly to its growth and development.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Association honoured its founding fathers, former executives and veteran sports journalists whose vision, courage and selfless dedication helped establish the strong foundation upon which SWAG stands today.
Looking to the future, SWAG stressed the need to empower young sports journalists to thrive in an ever-changing media landscape driven by artificial intelligence, social media and emerging digital platforms. The Association pledged to continue equipping aspiring storytellers with the skills, ethics and opportunities needed to compete on the global stage.
The statement also reaffirmed SWAG’s commitment to preserving the prestige of the annual SWAG Awards, Ghana’s longest-running sports awards scheme, to ensure outstanding athletes and sports personalities continue to receive national recognition.
SWAG expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Olympic Committee, corporate sponsors, sports federations, media organisations and the sporting public for their unwavering support throughout the Association’s journey.
As it enters its 59th year, SWAG called on its members to remain committed to professionalism, truth and the continued advancement of sports journalism and sports development in Ghana.
