The Accra Basketball League is set to resume on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, following a temporary suspension and the implementation of enhanced player safety measures, the Greater Accra Basketball Association (GABBA) has announced.
The decision comes after an interim advisory from a Committee of Inquiry constituted in the wake of the unfortunate passing of Michael Arhin. The Committee was tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and recommending measures to strengthen player welfare and safety across the league.

After preliminary hearings and a review of available information, the Committee advised that investigations could continue alongside league activities without compromising the integrity, independence, or thoroughness of the inquiry. Based on this guidance, GABBA has given the green light for the league to resume.
In response to the Committee’s recommendations, GABBA has rolled out a series of comprehensive safety and medical reforms. These include the adoption of Emergency Medical Response and Concussion Management Protocols, the procurement of first aid kits and emergency medical supplies, and the mandatory presence of qualified medical personnel at all league fixtures. The Association has also established a Player Emergency Contact Database and strengthened incident reporting procedures.
GABBA noted that the Committee’s work is still ongoing and reaffirmed its commitment to implementing any further recommendations that may arise from the final report. Ahead of the league’s resumption, all clubs will receive the new medical protocols and player medical information forms for onward distribution to players.

Announcing the resumption, GABBA Chairman Dr. Eric Opoku-Antwi underscored the Association’s resolve, stating that player safety remains the league’s highest priority.
With these measures in place, the Accra Basketball League returns with a renewed focus on safety, accountability, and the well-being of everyone involved in the game.
