Police Ladies have been crowned the maiden champions of the Women’s Democracy Cup after edging Army Ladies 1-0 in a hard-fought final at the LA McDan Park on Friday, August 7, 2026.
The historic encounter marked the introduction of the women’s edition of the Democracy Cup, which was instituted by the Parliament of Ghana in 2024 as part of activities celebrating 30 years of parliamentary democracy under the Fourth Republic.
With the competition entering its third year, organisers have expanded the initiative to include women’s football, giving two of Ghana’s leading security-service clubs the opportunity to battle for the inaugural title.
The final brought together Police Ladies and Army Ladies, with both sides coming into the contest after impressive campaigns in the 2025/26 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League. Army Ladies finished second in the Southern Zone, while Police Ladies placed fifth, setting the stage for an intriguing contest between the two security-service teams.
Police Ladies eventually emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win to etch their names into the history books as the first-ever Women’s Democracy Cup champions.
The result also provided an interesting twist to the rivalry between the two sides. Army Ladies had previously defeated Police Ladies by the same 1-0 scoreline to win their first-ever Women’s FA Cup title, but Police Ladies reversed the outcome on Friday to claim the inaugural Democracy Cup crown.
The day also featured a curtain-raiser between female Parliamentarians and representatives of the Judiciary, adding a strong institutional and symbolic touch to the event.
The introduction of the women’s competition comes as the men’s Democracy Cup continues to grow as an annual football fixture.
The first two editions of the men’s competition produced different champions, with Asante Kotoko winning the maiden edition in 2024 before Accra Hearts of Oak claimed the second edition in 2025.
Attention will now turn to the men’s third edition, which is scheduled for Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, where Kumasi Asante Kotoko will face Accra Hearts of Oak in a repeat of the maiden final.
